I had been allocated to the AER as there was not a survey TA unit in the area in which I lived. Once again I was posted to 14th Locating Battery RA and joined them for training at Larkhill, Wiltshire, on 8th August 1954. After a refresher session there, we went in convoy to Colchester Barracks in Essex for the second week, from where we had a series of field training including one night sleeping in the back of a 15cwt truck. The major excitement was when the tall aerial on the troop commanders’ vehicle touched a live overhead power line. Fortunately he survived without serious injury. During the evenings, most of us gate-crashed (did not pay to enter) the popular Butlin’s holiday camp at near-by Clacton-on-Sea to join the dancers!
The Government then decided to cancel future annual camps, and we had to return all our army issue in a kitbag. The final entry on my army records states – Discharged on 3/4/57 in consequence of Termination of Engagement 5 years 182 days.
