Random Jottings on Life at the Front

By GF Contributor - John Parnell

Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation

I still retain some vivid images from my times in the observation post at the AP. I was very privileged to witness the 25 pounder salvo of red white and blue smoke shells that descended on the forward slopes of the Chinese held hills, our celebration for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.

This must have been after I had been transferred to Able Troop, who were located to the left of Little Gibraltar, with its AP on Hill 159. This location was a little nearer towards the Hook area.

I have since learnt that both the pilot and observer parachuted safely to ground, unfortunately behind the Chinese lines and were taken prisoner.
